“These little pockets of safety are called refugia. They are tiny coverts where plants and creatures hide from destruction, hidden shelters where life persists and out of which new life emerges.”
“One of the best models of Christian refugia building that I know is the Iona Community. Founded in 1938 as a peace-and-justice ministry to Glasgow's poor, the Iona Community is "a dispersed Christian ecumenical community working for peace and social justice, rebuilding of community and the renewal of worship." Iona folk continue to prioritize peace, justice, and worship renewal, but environmental concerns have always been enfolded into their work as well. They have a base in Glasgow as well as a beautiful abbey on the Isle of Iona, where members gather regularly to worship and welcome the many pilgrims who visit Iona. Except for summer residencies on the isle, Iona members generally do not live together. They follow a common rule of practice and accountability, but they are dispersed, living in their own home communities, mostly in the UK. The Iona Community exemplifies the ripple effect possible with the refugia model. Beyond the members who have made the more strenuous commitments, the Iona Community also encompasses associate members, friends, or supporters-about two thousand around the world."

“These little pockets of safety are called refugia. They are tiny coverts where plants and creatures hide from destruction, hidden shelters where life persists and out of which new life emerges," offers Debra Reinstra as a lesson from nature for us. The example of the Iona Community is a compelling and inspiring one.
I am mindful of those in harm's way today from this oppressive US Administration -- immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, particularly trans people, the poor and all who rely on the safety net. How can we create refugia -- pockets of safety for those who are vulnerable? Surely there are actions we can take in terms of protest, advocacy and relief work.
