The Unbroken by Rashani Réa
There is a brokenness
out of which comes the unbroken,
a shatteredness
out of which blooms the unshatterable.
There is a sorrow
beyond all grief which leads to joy
and a fragility
out of whose depths emerges strength.
There is a hollow space
too vast for words
through which we pass with each loss,
out of whose darkness
we are sanctioned into being.
There is a cry deeper than all sound
whose serrated edges cut the heart
as we break open to the place inside
which is unbreakable and whole,
while learning to sing.

~ Rashani Rea
The title of this poem, The Unbroken, suggests to me that there is something inside of us, and something around us, that allows us to move through loss and heartbreak while maintaining our being, our dignity, our souls.
Our healing must include rage, grief, collapse, and resistance. This gives purpose for naming emotions that are part of the process of decolonizing all that is around us. Our bodies are not overreacting. They are responding and for that, we must give self-permission and permission to others.
