“I love the mornings when I step out and all is quiet. As soon as I whistle, the birds call out-not singing prettily, but loudly calling. They hop from branch to branch, and I can tell where they are by the flickering movement of leaves. Those calls come from different sets of titmice, nuthatches, chickadees, and Bewick's Wrens. Are they signaling my presence as a danger? Or could it possibly be they recognize I am the patron saint of very expensive mealworms? Yes, that's what it means, to judge by the three Pygmy Nuthatches standing on top of the fence. An impatient one flits down to a nearby feeder, clinging to the side, watching me carefully as I dole out the mealworms. More birds come and propagate like Christmas ornaments on a wispy tree. They are crying out to their clan that it's chow time. They are shrieking for me to hurry up and get out of the way. It's the noisy start of a new day.”
